Clinical Exemplar

A Clinical Exemplar (also called a Clinical Narrative) is a descriptive story of a nursing encounter with a patient, family, or other clinical situation that serves a number of purposes in professional nursing career advancement. It is a reflective practice that supports nursing knowledge development. You will likely be required to write clinical exemplars for job applications, continuing education, or clinical ladders. Many hospitals now require a clinical exemplar for annual performance review and peer evaluation. For this assignment you will:

Read experienced RN exemplars posted on Blackboard

Read “Writing an Exemplar (Clinical Narrative)”

Read “UMHS Writing Exemplars”

Write your own exemplar of a clinical scenario you’ve experienced in your nursing school clinicals (not working as a CNA or other health-related job) that deeply affected you in some way.

Please include the following elements:

Communication: How did effective or ineffective communication influence the outcome of the clinical scenario?

Delegation/prioritization: How did effective or ineffective delegation or prioritization influence the outcome of the clinical scenario?

Self-care: How did your self-care or the self-care of the health care team members (or lack thereof) influence the outcome of the clinical scenario?

Consider your potential audience for this exemplar (i.e., future employer); your exemplar should reflect professionalism and not outwardly criticize or complain about people or circumstances.
